A young boy, about seven, was racing his bike along a country road near his home.

As he approached an overpass, he braked hard, and came to a stop. There sat a huge truck with its trailer jammed tightly underneath the bridge.

Rescue vehicles, with lights flashing, blocked the only remaining open lane. A very large tow truck sat with engine idled, the driver puzzled at his repeated, failed attempts to dislodge the trailer.

Firefighters, policemen, truck driver, and several adult passersby gathered around the truck, all trying desperately to figure out how to free it from the bridge.

The young boy walked his bike up to the crowd. He caught the attention of a policeman. “What’s the matter, Officer?” he asked.

“The truck driver jammed his rig up under that bridge,” the patrol officer explained. “It’s stuck pretty tight. Tried several ways, but can’t seem to get it out.”

The young boy looked at the truck… then at the officer… and said matter-of-factly, “Why don’t they just let the air out of the tires?”

The officer was dumbfounded. He just shook his head, smiled at the boy, and said,

“Thanks kid!”

Be WUCA! for Schools - Coaching in the Classroom

Our experiences hiring high school and young adult workers chime in with the frustration of other business owners and heads of corporations: the quality of worker coming out of the high schools is not up to standard. Workers need to show up on time and be ready to work. They need to be able to get along and work well with others. There is often an air of entitlement with younger employees. They think that their mere presence is a gift to the business without hard work. So we took the requests for a stronger worker to the classroom to see if WUCA! would make a difference. Coaching in the Classroom (CIC) was created and began as a pilot project in 2009, focusing on 7th – 12th-graders in a rural Iowa school district and a metro alternative school, capitalizing on our more than 28 years’ expertise in rural business and economic development. CIC identifies student's passions, and uses positive self-talk and goal-setting utilized by championship athletes to develop championship students in the classroom.

CIC morphed after its first year in the rural district into a process that addresses students’ behaviors that put them “at-risk” of not graduating on time with their class, as defined by the Iowa Department of Education.

The Four Criteria

  1. Not being proficient in numeracy and literacy on Iowa Assessments;
  2. Failing at least one class;
  3. Not participating in any school activity; and
  4. Poor attendance and/or habitual tardiness.

If a student has a “check” in two of the four categories, they are considered “at-risk.” This designation doesn’t mean the child has substance abuse problems, any mental deficiencies, or other issues that could label them “at-risk.” It simply means that these behaviors are red flags – indicators that a student is developing habits that aren’t good for their academic and personal success in life.

Recognizing that these students will likely remain in their communities as employees and business owners after graduation, CIC connects these “at-risk” criteria to the behaviors employers require in employees that impact a workforce: show up on time. Be a lifelong learner and remember your lessons. Participate with others. Do “A”-quality work and turn it in on time.

The reality of our classrooms today is that our students are being taught core fundamentals, but our educational system, government mandates, and lack of solid parenting don’t allow time or staff to help them bridge the gap between school learning and applicability to the workforce once they leave school.

Coaching in the Classroom believes that all students will succeed when their passions, purpose, and goals align with their personal and occupational visions. CIC seeks to be the bridge that keeps all students in school through graduation and encourages self-motivation and drive for success in today’s global workforce.

CIC Goals

  • Improve scores of standardized assessments and other examinations.
  • Instill entrepreneurial spirit and skills to help students see the possibility of being local business owners and leaders.
  • Strengthen the local workforce by reinforcing the relevance of classroom instruction material to their futures.
  • Improve self-esteem of students when they achieve personal success raising scores and feel more hopeful about their future options.
  • Experience positive movement from students on youth surveys that measure students’ sense of security, belonging, and other less tangible but extremely important indicators for success.
  • Improve behavior of students in the community.
  • Improve relationships between students, staff, and faculty in school.
  • Improve relationships between the school, students, and the community.

Due to many factors, rural communities are being forced to look for new ways to sustain their towns and school districts. In this ever-evolving environment, the area workforce is changing from a blend of white- and blue-collar workers to a more dominant blue collar workforce, often resulting in more college-educated children choosing to look in metropolitan areas for work. The students who remain in their home area are more likely students for whom school was a more challenging and less satisfying experience.

These are the fine, bright people who, sooner or later, will likely become mayors and run the communities, city councils, school boards, churches, and civic organizations, owning businesses within the community.

In addition to in-class presentations, discussions, and field trips, CIC can specifically link students with businesses of interest to their identified passions. Communities, especially those in rural areas, need to aggressively integrate these students to pursue business succession and workforce improvement strategies in the area to increase population and school enrollment.

CIC includes real-life stories about roles and expectations as employees compared to how their employers view them. For example, students learn that tattoos, piercings, and texting on the job they feel are personal expressions and rights can affect their hirability and longevity at a business.

We set in place individual academic, extracurricular, and work-related steps to identify how to make life vision become reality. Sometimes this includes self-reflection and that is really, really tough for this population of students. Heck, most people don’t reflect because we often don’t like what we see, but it’s necessary for growth. It’s a valuable tool. So we include exercises that require them to glimpse into themselves and what they want. We encourage that they deserve what they dream. And that often requires changing their behaviors.

Involvement of the local businesses to strengthen the workforce can take place through relevant speakers to the classes, identifying gaps in businesses needed by the community, how students can look to fill the gaps, and understand how their high school learning will impact their future goals. It also takes the community to want to reach out to the students to welcome, engage, and recognize the talents they have to offer. Plus, community members need enthusiasm and patience to teach students the skills they need to learn.

In addition to all the activities and exercises included in CIC, we have encouraged students by

  • Telling them the criteria by which they have been measured since kindergarten. The mere knowledge of this “list” has been a revelation.
  • Telling them how to get off “the list” and that the ability to do so is completely within their power.
  • Helping them understand that their school attendance, classroom performance, attitude, and how they apply themselves at school matters to their ability to graduate and to future employment.
  • Ending every single class, and calling often through the halls, the single most important message from Coaching in the Classroom: make good choices. It hasn’t made us popular, but we’re known for it!

Results

  • Within months of CIC’s inception, students sent to the principal’s office for misbehavior was down more than 50 percent.
  • Students recognize that classroom work in core areas has direct impact on their future either in further education, enlisting in the military, or by remaining in or near their hometown and joining the workforce.
  • Student population considered “at-risk” has decreased from 41 to 12.3 percent.
  • The 2009 Freshman class set a goal for 100% of them to graduate on time and together. In 2013, they achieved the goal.

By identifying passions and aspirations with all students early in their school careers and helping them determine the steps to make their goals reality, students are more focused, better-behaved, and satisfied in high school, and better prepared whether they pursue a military career, go to college, or join the workforce upon graduation.

10 Leadership Lessons to Be WUCA!

10 Leadership Lessons By Dave Lavinsky

Both my son and daughter play Lacrosse.  In fact, my son's gotten really good and played in a 'select' league this summer.

Even though I never played Lacrosse, I was a high school and college athlete (soccer & wrestling) and am a huge proponent of kids playing sports.

I was recently sent an article written by the US Lacrosse Association entitled "10 Steps to a Positive Lacrosse Experience" on what parents can do to foster a better experience for their kids. I didn't find the article eye-opening -- just common sense stuff in my opinion -- until I started thinking about it in a business sense.

Specifically, these steps can be directly applied and serve as a great guide for being an effective leader. Let me show you why...

#1: Be supportive of your child by giving encouragement and showing an interest in his or her team.

As a leader, you need to constantly give encouragement to and show sincere interest in your employees if you want to motivate them and boost their performance.

#2: Attend games whenever possible. If you cannot attend, ask about your child's experience, not whether the team won or lost.

Great leaders see what's going on in the workplace. They walk around. They attend meetings. And they speak to their employees to understand how things are going.

#3: Be a positive role model by displaying good sportsmanship at all times to coaches, officials, opponents, and your child's teammates.

Effective leaders are positive role models. If you don't act in the manner you'd like your employees to act, they won't.

#4: Let your child set his own goals and play the game for himself/herself. Be your child's "home court advantage" by giving him or her your unconditional support regardless of how well he or she performs.

Great leaders allow their employees to set goals. Sure, those goals need to align with the organization's goals. But employees are much more successful and dedicated to achieving goals that they set or helped establish. And employees who do not meet their goals should be supported and helped so that they improve and meet their goals the next time.

#5: Let the coach coach. Refrain from giving your child advice when he or she is playing.

If your organization has multiple levels of management, this comes into play. For example, if a manager tells an employee one thing, the organization's president needs to be careful not to tell that employee conflicting information. All management needs to be on the same page - this is simply done via effective communications.

#6: Respect the decisions of the referee or umpire. This is an important part of honoring the game. Your child will pay more attention to how you act than to what you say.

Things will not always go right in organizations. Some battles you will win, and others you will lose. When you lose a battle, the answer is never to point fingers or complain about external reasons that caused the failure. Rather, you must accept the failure, and figure out how to improve and avoid failure next time.

#7: Read the rule book. A full understanding of the rules will help you enjoy the game and educate others.

In my opinion, the only real rule book in business is the ethics rule book. By being a positive role model (see #3) and showing a high degree of ethics, your employees will most likely do the same.

#8: Get to know who is in charge. Meet with the leadership of the program, whether it's school-sponsored or recreational, to discuss topics such as cost, practice and game scheduling, insurance coverage, emergency procedures, etc.

Effective leaders get involved in their industries. They go to industry events. They meet other leaders. They sit on industry boards.

No organization operates in isolation. Understand and get involved in your industry. This will help with setting industry policies, finding partner organizations, and becoming well-known, which will positively influence sales, the number of quality employees seeking to join you, etc.

#9: Get involved! A great way to support your child's Lacrosse experience is by becoming a volunteer for the program. Some of the ways you can get involved: keep the scorebook, run the clock...

See #2 -- make sure you circulate around your workplace and get involved.

#10: Sit back and enjoy the game. Remember, Lacrosse is played for FUN.

Great leaders enjoy the journey and not just the end result. Running an organization is hard work, but it should be fun. You should be doing what you love to do. And if your employees are motivated and truly care about the welfare of your organization, running your organization is an extremely rewarding experience.

POSITION Rights

Influence will not extend beyond the lines of your job description. People follow because they have to.  The longer you stay here, the higher the turnover and the lower the morale.

PERMISSION Relationships

People follow because they want to.  People will follow you beyond your stated authority.  This level allows work to be fun. Caution:  Staying too long on this level without rising will cause highly motivated people to become restless.

PRODUCTION Results

People follow because of what you have done for the organization.   This is where success is sensed by most people.  They like you and what you are doing.  Problems are fixed with very little effort because of momentum.

PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT Reproduction

People follow because of what you have done for them. This is where long-range growth occurs.  Your commitment to developing leaders will insure ongoing growth to the organization and to people.  Do whatever you can to achieve and stay on this level.

PERSONHOOD Respect

People follow because of who you are and what you represent. This step is reserved for leaders who have spent years growing people and organizations.  Few make it.  Those who do are bigger than life.

You want to choose a level that you are comfortable with to lead.  Always strive to move up the list to become the best leader you can. Leadership is all about getting other people to become what they can become.  Give a hand-up and you will receive rewards that you could not imagine.

Discover Your Purpose Through Be WUCA! Coaching

When 10 years from now is over, will you look back and wonder "where did those 10 years go?" Will you be asking yourself the question of "why am I still doing what I am doing?"

Is there integrity in what I do for a living?

If I could be doing anything I wanted to do, assured that all my living expenses and material needs and desires would somehow be fulfilled, would I be working where I currently am employed or operate?

Are there any negative aspects to my work? Can I change any negative aspects?

What is positive about my work?

Can I achieve my purpose only in this job?

Do I wake up in the morning excited for the day, or do I dread what is ahead of me?

If I could wake up every morning, excited to face the day and eager to get to work, what would that day look like?

Your Self-Talk Determines Your Health

Your voice is the voice that you listen to the most. So stop and consider what you say to yourself. It will be the healthiest thing that you have ever done because you become what you think about. 

What if, as a nation, we did not listen to the news? What if, as a nation, we did not listen to the so-called experts on the economy tell us how bad it is out there?

I agree that we need knowledge of what is going on, but really, the repetition of how bad it is plays on the mind and has the power to make it "true."

Look at all the businesses making record profits, but who are not hiring or expanding because of the information they are hearing. If the economy is so bad, why do they have record profits?

It is that way with everything we think about.

Do you always get a cold a certain time of year? Do you fulfill your own expectations?

Before you try something, do you ever tell yourself that it is not going to turn out the way you wanted? What's your end result?

It is no wonder that drug companies are making record profits. We are eating right out of their hands. Did you know that up to 60% of the most popular drugs sold today deal with emotional issues like depression, stress, and high blood pressure? Have you noticed that the ads for these are broadcast around the evening news? Do you think there is a coincidence?

More and more people are dying of stress-related illnesses then ever before. Do you think that it is because 75% of the information that you hear in a day is negative? Most of the information you hear is coming into your belief system and you are accepting what is being said. When you believe what you hear, your body reacts in the way of your belief.

We listen to the newscast and get depressed, and then watch the commercials from a drug company that says this drug will cure our depression.

You need to combat your thoughts and protect your belief system. If you don't, you will likely go down the path well-traveled by many others, because if you always DO, what you've always DONE, you'll always GET, what you've always GOT!

It is because of the way you think and the way you think about yourself and your well-being.

Only one person can change your life and that person is you. You are accountable to you and accountable for your outcomes, but sometimes it's nice to have accountability partner.

When You Dream Big, Big Things Happen

Big ideas grow even bigger when they're discussed and mulled over in a relaxed setting that's completely separate of a conference room or boardroom. In fact, many of the best ideas I've created have come from driving down the road, doodling, brainstorming with my wife, and looking out the window. Dreams are the vehicle that is used to move innovation forward. Dreams are your internal want list. What would happen to your life if you made your dreams your internal "To Do" list?

Here is one story of a friend of mine who attended a Big Dream Gathering. Tami shares her big dream to make big things happen.

My dear friend, Shannessy (Schultes) Michaels, invited me to my first Big Dream Gathering in West Des Moines in May of 2010.

I was at a real low point in my life - one might even call it a pit. The major battle on that day was recovery from a mastectomy & reconstruction after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. This would have been a “do-able” hurdle but my breast cancer diagnosis came two months after I had a thyroid tumor removed…and the thyroid tumor had been preceded by two surgeries related to be diagnosed with melanoma in the spring of 2008. The kicker was that all of these “storms” hit about 18 months after my husband of 16 years was killed.

Now, before everyone gets all “oh, my goodness” on me, let me clarify:

  • First, today I am cancer-free.
  • Second, God has been very good to me and my two children (aged 14 and 11 when their dad died).

We were blessed with amazing friends and family and the kindness of perfect strangers.

That being said, I must admit, by May of 2010, I felt like I had been hit by a bus…and then the bus had backed up. When Shannessy invited me to the BDG, I was hesitant, but it’s hard to say “no” to Shannessy. She told me that it was a wonderful exercise in faith–even if my “dreams” didn’t come true right away, the act of putting them on paper for people to see is a spiritual experience.

I told a friend that I was going. He asked, “What’s your big dream?” I wasn’t sure. He reminded me it wasn’t the “Average Dream Gathering."

I began to allow myself the luxury of dreaming again.

I had been so focused on my kids and supporting them that I had left little time in the day or in my life for dreaming. So, I went to the “Big Dream Gathering."

I remember sitting at the table and looking at the blank form thinking, “My

dreams don’t seem as “BIG” as others I’ve read. Maybe they aren’t big enough” (code for: not important enough to articulate) But I wrote them down and posted them - and have been forever changed. Not because they have manifested, but because I surrendered to the still small Voice that said: “They are YOUR dreams…and that’s BIG."

One of the dreams I posted that day was to find a job as a dental hygienist in an office that had health insurance benefits. I had been working as a fundraising director since my husband’s death. One of the gifts he gave to me before he died was his insistence that I pursue a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from Creighton University. Two years after receiving that degree, he was gone. I took a job that had benefits so I could be close to my children while they were in school. It was a God-thing, because seven months after I started, my melanoma was diagnosed. But now it was time to move on and I longed to get back into dentistry.

So, I posted my dream, and last July, I began working as a dental hygienist again - with health benefits!

But the biggest big dream was one I wasn’t sure I could throw out there.

I could hardly let myself think about it, let alone post it for all of West Des Moines to see. After a long meeting with the “committee in my head," I wrote it down.

My biggest big dream was/is to be obedient to God and ask him to bring me a Jesus Freak, musician-type, knight-in-shining-armor soul mate!

After nearly five years of widowhood, I would like to fall in love again.

Yikes! I had said it. And I guess I said it again here.

I have to admit–my life hasn’t been the same since posting my big dreams on those walls in West Des Moines a year ago. People on the outside might not notice it. I haven’t found a cure for cancer. I haven’t adopted children from a war-torn country.

I HAVE been able to see my life and my world through different eyes.

Through the eyes of a dreamer.

And who knows? Maybe I will team up with my new mate, find a cure for cancer AND adopt children from a war-torn country and change the world!

We Have Always Done It This Way!

A mother and daughter were preparing a roast for a family dinner. The daughter cut the ends off of the roast before putting it in the roaster, just as she was taught. She asked her mother, “why do we cut the ends off of the roast before we cook it?” “I am not sure,” said the mother. “I guess it makes it taste better, but let’s go ask grandma.” So they went to ask grandma. “Grandma?” asked the mother. “why did you teach me to cut the ends off of the roast before cooking it?”

“Because it makes the roast taste better,” responded Grandma. “Besides, that is the way my mother taught me. Let’s go ask her.”

So the three of them went to ask the one who started the cutting of the ends off of the roast.

“Great Grandmother, why do you cut the ends off of the roast before you cook it? Does it make the roast taste better?"

"Heavens no,” said the great grandmother. “I cut the ends off of the end of the roast because that is the only way I could get it to fit into the pan I used.”

Sometimes we have to look at the history of why we do things. Is it really necessary to continue some of the things that we do or do we do them just because we are comfortable doing it that way?

We do things just because we have always done it that way before.

When you keep doing the things to get what you get, you keep getting the things you got.

You can change without improving but you cannot improve without changing.

Plan from Imagination, not Memory.

As Yogi Bera said; “THE FUTURE AIN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE!” For hundreds of years, the world of business stayed pretty much the same, so what you learned from experience could be used for a long, long time. In fact, experience was your insurance policy. It almost guaranteed success.

If you are to grow and prosper in sustainable ways, entrepreneurial thinking needs to be valued and encouraged at all levels of leadership. You can no longer use the term “WE’VE NEVER DONE IT THAT WAY BEFORE!!!!” It takes hard work and effort to change, as change does not come easily.

Experience is not as helpful as it used to be.  The world is changing so rapidly that your experience may not always be a very good guide for the future.

Not convinced? Just take a look at a few facts:

Today, the body of knowledge known to mankind doubles every 907 days.

Our computing ability and capacity doubles every 14 months.

We once marveled at the advanced technology on Apollo 13.  Today your car has more technology than that rocket.

The first UNIVAC computer filled an entire room, but today your wristwatch has more power than that computer.

The average 21-year-old today can expect 11 to 14 jobs and two to three major career changes.

The average 21-year-old today can expect to spend more time taking care of his parents than his children.

Right now we have more people living on the planet than have ever died in the past.

You, your business, or your organization is not immune to the change process. You cannot be a leadership organization that is based upon traditions. You need to use imagination as new directions and partnerships are being developed. Will this make some people nervous, uncomfortable and complain?  Yes! Will it be worth it?  In my experience, yes!

Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial thinking involves seeing opportunities and having the ability to take and manage risks. It can emerge from industry experience or happen by accident coming from a hobby. It may result from developing local ideas or bringing new entrepreneurial talent into the community and requires individual as well as community attitude, vision, and passion to create.

You have two choices: choose to be proactive and be determined to make things happen, or be reactive and complain about things that happen to you because you choose to sit back and watch.

Economic and entrepreneurial development requires innovative thinking and new ways of doing  things as well as constantly changing and developing leadership.

Development requires all people in the organization to work together for a common vision.  Development is an attitude, as well as action.

You will hear people express how happy they are for change to take place, and those who complain because of change. You can make up your own mind how to react to change, but one thing is certain, the world is changing at a faster rate than ever before and there are no signs that point to it slowing down.

What will you do to lead this new type of thinking?  Refer to your experiences when appropriate and learn from them, but consider Wayne Gretsky’s approach to planning. As one of the greatest hockey stars of all time, he was asked what made him so successful.  He said, “I SKATE TO WHERE I THINK THE PUCK WILL BE.”

In today’s world, you have to go out and meet the opportunity and work to make it happen.

Appreciation Stops Negative Thoughts!

"How do I stop my negative thoughts?" is a question that Ihave been asked many times. If you have ever asked this question, then you will feel such enormous relief in knowing the answer, because it is so simple. How do you stop negative thoughts?

You show appreciation and plant good thoughts!

When you try to stop negative thoughts, you are focusing on what you don't want - negative thoughts - and you will attract an abundance of them. They can never disappear if you are focused on them. The "stop" part is irrelevant - the negative thoughts are your focus. It doesn't matter if you are trying to stop negative thoughts or control them or push them away, the result is the same. Your focus is on negative thoughts, and by the law of attraction, you are inviting more of them to you.

The truth is always simple and it is always easy. To stop negative thoughts, just plant good thoughts! Deliberately plant good thoughts!

You plant good thoughts by making it a daily practice to appreciate all the things in your day. Appreciate your health, your car, your home, your family, your job, your friends, your surroundings, your meals, your pets, and the magnificent beauty of the day.

Appreciate, compliment, praise, and give thanks for all things. Every time you say "Thank you," it is a good thought! As you plant more and more good thoughts, the negative thoughts will be wiped out. Why? Because your focus is on good thoughts, and what you focus on, you attract.

So don't give any attention to negative thoughts. Don't worry about them. If any come, make light of them, shrug them off, and let them be your reminder to deliberately think more good thoughts now.

The more appreciating thoughts you can plant in a day, the faster your life will be utterly transformed into all good. If you spend only one day speaking of good things and saying "Thank you" at every single opportunity, you will not believe your tomorrow. Deliberately thinking good thoughts is exactly like planting seeds. As you think good thoughts you are planting good seeds inside you, and the  universe will transform those seeds into a garden of paradise.

How will the garden of paradise appear? As your life!

Understood is getting to understand what they want before you have them understand what you want.  Understanding is valuing another’s point-of-view, meeting them more than halfway in their viewpoint and developing empathy for their circumstance. As Stephen Covey says, "seek first to understand then to be understood."

Comfortable is a personal feeling.  When a person is comfortable, they have developed a sense of trust of you. Building that relationship takes integrity and following through with your promises and commitments. Giving them a feeling that they would like to return and develop a deeper relationship.

Appreciated is the most valued feeling a person desires. Most employees want appreciation from their employers more than they want an increase in money. It is just plain Gratitude in Action. Just like the saying goes; “a pat on the back goes so much farther than a kick in the pants!”
