Change Your Response to Change Your Circumstances

We teach in our workshops that everyone loves change, they just don't like transition. Change is nothing more than creating new habits, taking some people longer to adapt to new ways of doing and thinking about things. 

Habits are merely reactions and responses we have learned to perform automatically without having to think or decide, most by our subconscious. Fully 95 percent of our behaviors, feelings, and responses are habitual.

All of our attitudes, emotions, and beliefs tend to become habitual. In our lives, we've learned that certain attitudes and ways of feeling and thinking are appropriate to certain situations, so we tend to think, feel, and act the same way whenever we encounter what we interpret as the same sort of situation.

For example, over time, arguments between spouse, business partners, or communities, become habitual. People learn to “push buttons.” You say this to me, I say this to you, and back and forth, acting out the identical script and responding in exactly the same way as you have done many times before.

The great news is that these habits can be modified, changed, and reversed, simply by taking the trouble to make a conscious decision, and then practice and act out the new response or behavior. It requires constant watchfulness and practice until the new behavior pattern is learned, but it can be accomplished!

In "The Be WUCA! Way," we call this "driving your WUCA! CAR," for C (Circumstances) + A (Actions) = R (Results.) To change your circumstances, you have to change your actions to get the results you want. This is the only way to achieve what you want.

Seven pledges to change your habitual response:

Raise your right hand and repeat after me! 

  1. I will be as cheerful as possible.
  2. I will act friendlier toward people.
  3. I will be less critical and more tolerant of other people, their opinions, failings, and mistakes. I will place the best possible interpretation on their actions.
  4. I will not judge other people. I will not let my own opinion color facts in a pessimistic or negative way.
  5. I will practice smiling at least three times during the day.
  6. I will react as calmly and as intelligently as possible.
  7. I will ignore completely and close my mind to all those pessimistic and negative comments that I can do nothing to change.

Simple? No. But each of these habits of acting, feeling, and thinking has an influence on your self-image. Commit to these seven pledges for 30 days, then teach them to somebody else. See if worry, guilt, hostility have been decreased and if confidence and a better outlook on life and your situation has increased.

Get Your Head in the Game

One of the biggest challenges in meeting any goal, whether it be related to productivity, waking early, changing a habit, exercising, or just becoming happier, is finding the motivation to stick with it.

 If you can stick with a goal for long enough, you’ll almost always get there eventually. It just takes patience and motivation. Motivation is the key, but it’s not always easy, day in and day out, to find that motivation.

One way to get you there quicker, is with another person, a coach.

A goal-setting coaching process that will help you to understand the “why” and the “how” goals are achieved. If you have ever wanted to achieve that "magic" weight; if you have ever wanted to have the endurance; if you have ever wanted to earn a grade; if you have ever wanted to achieve any goal, then even before you even start your program, you will want to give yourself a “head” start to achieving your goals!

Name calling! Finger-pointing! Backbiting!

Blaming others seems to be the norm these days. Should it be?

Tear down this wall!

Years ago, East and West Germany became one nation. A wall was torn down. It is time our walls between differing ideologies, values and opinions come down.

Effective leaders cultivate a safe and supportive climate in which relationships are based on inclusivity, trust, and mutual respect. Only in a supportive environment can people feel safe to express differences of opinions and work toward “win-win” solutions.

This country and so many communities, groups, and political organizations need to listen to each other. Not just not talk and take positions, but to listen to why people hold a particular view. The environment we create teaches generations of individuals how to think about, talk about, talk to, and treat one another.

Listening is an action!

Listening is a skill that requires intentional development. Just as you needed to learn how to walk correctly, relationships require the skill to actively listen because much of the time when an issue arises, the problem on the surface usually has a problem behind it where the true issue lies.

We each view life and the issues we encounter through our own filters. Unique opinions and values form through our environment: the people we grew up with. Live and work around. Our experiences, thoughts, and perceptions about them. The values we have formed throughout our lives. We create environments everywhere. Family. Friends. Work. Worship. The grocery store. The car. Play.

Inherent in every relationship, conflict is a difference in perspectives. The diversity of perspectives within relationships helps generate ideas and facilitate change. If it is managed wisely, conflict is an opportunity. Listen for values to identify the issue.

Don't just talk about an issue, talk through it

The search for common ground on tough issues is more productive using a technique called "deliberative dialogue," seeking "why" people hold their position. Dialogue talks through an issue, not just takes a stand about - for or against - an issue. When you seek to understand the "why" others act the way they do, you discover a person's values. From there, you can work together to identify a positive outcome in a safe space. People can come together, talk through perspectives on issues, and find common ground that will create a better environment.

Consider these questions when identifying the "problem behind the problem." Be sure to intentionally involve all affected parties in the dialogue.

Naming the issue: What do you think is the problem? What bothers you?

Framing the issue: What can/should we do about the problem?

Deliberating to understand values: If we do what you suggest, what do you think would happen?

What would be fair? Effective?

Why would we be better off? How would we be better off?

What is the downside?

If there is a downside, would we change our minds? What different course could we pursue?

Acting together to find common ground: What would you and the affected parties be willing to do about the problem? What are you willing to give up to do what you want to do?

Are you seeking civility? Check your environment. See if people listen to and respect one another. If you need a technique, try deliberative dialogue.

Responsible Citizenship and Change

WUCA!-led communities are more open-minded, approachable, tend to have more newcomers, and they allow new people to make new ideas happen. Studies show U.S. state populations seeing growth have a higher percentage of newcomers than native-borns. A rural community that I once worked with told about a person who had moved to that community within the last two years. With three children enrolled in the district, she was at a school board meeting, and stood up to share her opinions on the issue at hand.

When she sat down, the lady next to her turned and told her that she had no right to talk at this meeting. The shocked woman asked why not. The woman replied that “she hadn’t lived here long enough.” Though she had children in the school, she'd only lived in the community a brief amount of time which, apparently, equaled her value and ability to contribute. In our town, we know people who moved to our community 30 years ago who still don’t feel they belong because their grandparents aren’t buried in the local cemetery.

As a leader, you need to look at your policies. Are they welcoming? As communities, counties, and states, do you allow newcomers to move in and do you embrace them? Yes, leaders love it when new companies come to town. There’s a ribbon-cutting for a new business,  a rousing welcome to all the new people to town, then, in a month, the excitement dies down and the new people that the community was excited about become  “those” new people with all those “strange” new ideas. Or sometimes you hear comments when they become successful, they must have done something “wrong” and “underhanded” to gain that accomplishment. Communities and people in general, have a habit of trying to pull successful people down to their level because there is a tendency to not like people who are doing better than they are because they have such low self-esteem.

Really, we often only like change if the change doesn’t affect us.

The result is that the future remains the same because people often refuse to take their role as responsible citizens to make change that is necessary. It’s hard work. It is messy. It requires talking to people. It requires acknowledging the world is not as black and white as we thought. Change requires slogging through the “gray” of an issue to see it through the eyes of another’s experience. Change requires that we may have to give up our way and do it someone else’s.

Remember that for every result that you want, there is a certain way of thinking, believing, and acting. You can change without improving, but you cannot improve without changing.

Habits Form Early. Living Them Is A Choice.

What do you do that reminds you of your parents? Do you ever remember saying, “I will never do this to my kids” or “I will never be like my mom or my dad!”

If you said those things, I want you to do something right now. 

Look around you. How you have decorated? Remind you of someone?

How about disciplining your kids? Remind you of someone?

Now go through the list and compare:

  • Work/Career
  • Where you live
  • Recreation
  • What you eat.
  • What time you eat
  • Hobbies
  • Social graces (or lack of)
  • Education
  • Cultural discrimination
  • Spirituality
  • Attitude about money
  • Spending habits
  • Appearance
  • Books/music/literature
  • Relationships

The habits of your parents or the people that raised you, make an impact on you whether you like it or not. It is neither good or bad unless you want it to be.

Some traditions are good. They provide an anchor and stability. However, traditions just for the sake of "we have always done it, but it has no meaning" are not good.

What you have to do is go through each of the habits and see where they are getting you. Is the habit getting you closer to your goals or is it creating a barrier between where you are and where you want to be?

You either do something and like it or you make up your mind to make a conscious decision to change what you are doing.

It is up to you. It is not your parent's fault, it is not your grandparent's fault. It is not the politician’s, or your spouse’s fault. Nor is your teacher to blame.

You are who you are because you chose to respond in certain ways.

Life happens because of our responses to events. We create our world.

Do you like yours? Take responsibility for who you are, where you are, and why you live the way you live.

Live what you like and change what you don’t. It is up to you.

What You Become Starts With How You Believe You Are

When you Be WUCA! you will see a transformation in how others act toward you and how you feel about yourself! I have learned that as you think, you become, as do your expectations. It takes effort, but with a little practice and some outside coaching, you will be able to change your inner dialogue and consequently change your outcomes. To become, you have to first believe…

How do you become a good student?                                    You believe that you are.

How do you become a good teacher?                                    You believe that you are.

How do you become a good administrator?                         You believe that you are.

How do you become a good athlete?                                     You believe that you are.

How do you become a good coach?                                        You believe that you are.

 Remember the formula:  E+R=O (Event +Response=Outcome)

To:        "I’ll work at being peaceful and not allow anyone to bring me down."

From:   "My children have never shown me any respect."

To:        "I intend to teach my children to respect all of life, and I’ll treat them in the same way."

From:   "I’m so annoyed with my family. They just don’t understand me and they never have."

To:        "I love my family; they don’t see things my way, but I don’t expect them to. I’m totally focused on my own intention, and I send them love."

From:   "I feel so unappreciated by those I serve that it sometimes makes me cry."

"Because you cannot see outside of you what you fail to see inside.

When you change your response to situations to a new way of looking at the world, your world will change. Make it a habit this week that you will move from not believing in yourself to believing that you will literally move toward what you believe and think about.

 Let no one stand between you and your belief. It is the only thing that has built dreams, created ambitions, and achieved success. Be WUCA!

Discover Your Purpose Through Be WUCA! Coaching

When 10 years from now is over, will you look back and wonder "where did those 10 years go?" Will you be asking yourself the question of "why am I still doing what I am doing?"

 Find your purpose as an individual: what is the best use of your time, talent and passion? Have a conversation with your coach about your occupation. 

Why do I have the job I have?

Who does my work serve?

What do they do with what I provide?

Do they in turn, help others with what I give them?

Is there integrity in what I do for a living?

If I could be doing anything I wanted to do, assured that all my living expenses and material needs and desires would somehow be fulfilled, would I be working where I currently am employed or operate?

Are there any negative aspects to my work? Can I change any negative aspects?

What is positive about my work?

Can I achieve my purpose only in this job?

Do I wake up in the morning excited for the day, or do I dread what is ahead of me?

If I could wake up every morning, excited to face the day and eager to get to work, what would that day look like?

Your Self-Talk Determines Your Health

Your voice is the voice that you listen to the most. So stop and consider what you say to yourself. It will be the healthiest thing that you have ever done because you become what you think about. 

What if, as a nation, we did not listen to the news? What if, as a nation, we did not listen to the so-called experts on the economy tell us how bad it is out there?

I agree that we need knowledge of what is going on, but really, the repetition of how bad it is plays on the mind and has the power to make it "true."

Look at all the businesses making record profits, but who are not hiring or expanding because of the information they are hearing. If the economy is so bad, why do they have record profits?

It is that way with everything we think about.

Do you always get a cold a certain time of year? Do you fulfill your own expectations?

Before you try something, do you ever tell yourself that it is not going to turn out the way you wanted? What's your end result?

It is no wonder that drug companies are making record profits. We are eating right out of their hands. Did you know that up to 60% of the most popular drugs sold today deal with emotional issues like depression, stress, and high blood pressure? Have you noticed that the ads for these are broadcast around the evening news? Do you think there is a coincidence?

More and more people are dying of stress-related illnesses then ever before. Do you think that it is because 75% of the information that you hear in a day is negative? Most of the information you hear is coming into your belief system and you are accepting what is being said. When you believe what you hear, your body reacts in the way of your belief.

We listen to the newscast and get depressed, and then watch the commercials from a drug company that says this drug will cure our depression.

You need to combat your thoughts and protect your belief system. If you don't, you will likely go down the path well-traveled by many others, because if you always DO, what you've always DONE, you'll always GET, what you've always GOT!

It is because of the way you think and the way you think about yourself and your well-being.

Only one person can change your life and that person is you. You are accountable to you and accountable for your outcomes, but sometimes it's nice to have accountability partner.

Formula to Change Your Life

Have you ever wished that you could know a formula for changing something in your life that you wanted to change?  I am going to give you a formula that all you have to do is insert the variable that you want changed. Your Body   +  Your Brain +   Your Beliefs and Habits  = Your Results

Your body is your computer hardware, your brain is your operating system, it can be a mac or a pc, and your beliefs and habits are the software that you use to progam your system.  The system that you have is only programmed to do what you tell it to do. So if you want to change something about you, you have to change your programming, change the software that you use.

You have a conscious mind and you have a subconscious mind.

Your conscious mind:

  • Accepts or reject any idea or goal.
  • Imagines and decide what you want to achieve.
  • Determines what actions you need to take.
  • Discusses your goals and dreams and cause you to get excited about them.
  • Gets you to take action for a short period of time.

Your subconscious mind:

  • Controls 96% of all your decisions in your emotions, perceptions and behaviors.
  • Controls all of your life supporting systems.
  • Can not tell the real from the imagined.
  • Immediately will act upon any idea impressed upon it.

The reason that it takes time to change something about us is that we do not maintain our focus on our change.  We want immediate results and when we don’t see any change, we give up and tell ourselves that this stuff does not work.

You have to persist in your change to be successful.  You have to  reprogram your computer to start living the change.  It takes 30 – 90 days to change a habit.

Now put emotion to what you want to change. Your emotional mind is 35% more powerful than your logical mind. Put emotion to it and you will get to your goal much faster. Emotion will hijack your logical mind and move you toward whatever and wherever you have emotion attached.

Your subconscious mind always moves toward your thinking. Keep focused on the change and persist until you are successful.

Find yourself a coach to help you focus on what you want to change.  Athletes need someone to guide them to success.  If you want to be successful, do what successful people do.

When You Dream Big, Big Things Happen

Big ideas grow even bigger when they're discussed and mulled over in a relaxed setting that's completely separate of a conference room or boardroom. In fact, many of the best ideas I've created have come from driving down the road, doodling, brainstorming with my wife, and looking out the window. Dreams are the vehicle that is used to move innovation forward. Dreams are your internal want list. What would happen to your life if you made your dreams your internal "To Do" list?

Here is one story of a friend of mine who attended a Big Dream Gathering. Tami shares her big dream to make big things happen.

My dear friend, Shannessy (Schultes) Michaels, invited me to my first Big Dream Gathering in West Des Moines in May of 2010.

I was at a real low point in my life - one might even call it a pit. The major battle on that day was recovery from a mastectomy & reconstruction after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. This would have been a “do-able” hurdle but my breast cancer diagnosis came two months after I had a thyroid tumor removed…and the thyroid tumor had been preceded by two surgeries related to be diagnosed with melanoma in the spring of 2008. The kicker was that all of these “storms” hit about 18 months after my husband of 16 years was killed.

Now, before everyone gets all “oh, my goodness” on me, let me clarify:

  • First, today I am cancer-free.
  • Second, God has been very good to me and my two children (aged 14 and 11 when their dad died).

We were blessed with amazing friends and family and the kindness of perfect strangers.

That being said, I must admit, by May of 2010, I felt like I had been hit by a bus…and then the bus had backed up. When Shannessy invited me to the BDG, I was hesitant, but it’s hard to say “no” to Shannessy. She told me that it was a wonderful exercise in faith–even if my “dreams” didn’t come true right away, the act of putting them on paper for people to see is a spiritual experience.

I told a friend that I was going. He asked, “What’s your big dream?” I wasn’t sure. He reminded me it wasn’t the “Average Dream Gathering."

I began to allow myself the luxury of dreaming again.

I had been so focused on my kids and supporting them that I had left little time in the day or in my life for dreaming. So, I went to the “Big Dream Gathering."

I remember sitting at the table and looking at the blank form thinking, “My

dreams don’t seem as “BIG” as others I’ve read. Maybe they aren’t big enough” (code for: not important enough to articulate) But I wrote them down and posted them - and have been forever changed. Not because they have manifested, but because I surrendered to the still small Voice that said: “They are YOUR dreams…and that’s BIG."

One of the dreams I posted that day was to find a job as a dental hygienist in an office that had health insurance benefits. I had been working as a fundraising director since my husband’s death. One of the gifts he gave to me before he died was his insistence that I pursue a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from Creighton University. Two years after receiving that degree, he was gone. I took a job that had benefits so I could be close to my children while they were in school. It was a God-thing, because seven months after I started, my melanoma was diagnosed. But now it was time to move on and I longed to get back into dentistry.

So, I posted my dream, and last July, I began working as a dental hygienist again - with health benefits!

But the biggest big dream was one I wasn’t sure I could throw out there.

I could hardly let myself think about it, let alone post it for all of West Des Moines to see. After a long meeting with the “committee in my head," I wrote it down.

My biggest big dream was/is to be obedient to God and ask him to bring me a Jesus Freak, musician-type, knight-in-shining-armor soul mate!

After nearly five years of widowhood, I would like to fall in love again.

Yikes! I had said it. And I guess I said it again here.

I have to admit–my life hasn’t been the same since posting my big dreams on those walls in West Des Moines a year ago. People on the outside might not notice it. I haven’t found a cure for cancer. I haven’t adopted children from a war-torn country.

I HAVE been able to see my life and my world through different eyes.

Through the eyes of a dreamer.

And who knows? Maybe I will team up with my new mate, find a cure for cancer AND adopt children from a war-torn country and change the world!

Change

Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing in the same way and expecting to get different results. Creating change requires personal action to achieve a different outcome. Many times we vote with the “throw the bums out” mentality. We fire people when we don’t like the environment.  We throw out the volunteer when they do something we don’t like and the activity is not going the way we think it should. We don’t like the way things are so we want someone else to change them.

We say, "we need change and we need it now!! I don’t like what is happening to me!" So we vote for people that promise us change. We hire people with different experiences to change our environment. We select people to lead us in organizations so we won’t have to do the job.

But then we complain about the change that we demanded; that we wanted. We say, "we can’t do this" or "we can’t do that" because:

"WE HAVE NEVER DONE IT THAT WAY BEFORE!!”

Or

"The change didn't turn out the way I thought it was going to turn out. Even though the change is for the better, it is not for the better for me and my situation. The environment changed, but our circumstances did not.  I am no better off now than I was before the change happened."

Is this what we hear in each political cycle? The problem is that we are the ones that need to change and we don’t want to. We really actually like things just the way they are because they are familiar, even if we complain. Even if someone that we vote into an office says they will change things and they actually do, we say "NO!" We don’t want to do that!"

We only like change if the change does not affect us!

The future remains the same because many people often refuse to take our role as responsible citizens to make the change that is necessary because it is hard work. It is messy. It requires talking to people. It requires acknowledging the world is not as black and white as we thought. Change requires slogging through the "gray" of an issue to see it through the eyes of another's experience.

If you want things to be different in your world, you have to have change. You have to let new things happen. You need to act the change that you wish to happen.

We Have Always Done It This Way!

A mother and daughter were preparing a roast for a family dinner. The daughter cut the ends off of the roast before putting it in the roaster, just as she was taught. She asked her mother, “why do we cut the ends off of the roast before we cook it?” “I am not sure,” said the mother. “I guess it makes it taste better, but let’s go ask grandma.” So they went to ask grandma. “Grandma?” asked the mother. “why did you teach me to cut the ends off of the roast before cooking it?”

“Because it makes the roast taste better,” responded Grandma. “Besides, that is the way my mother taught me. Let’s go ask her.”

So the three of them went to ask the one who started the cutting of the ends off of the roast.

“Great Grandmother, why do you cut the ends off of the roast before you cook it? Does it make the roast taste better?"

"Heavens no,” said the great grandmother. “I cut the ends off of the end of the roast because that is the only way I could get it to fit into the pan I used.”

Sometimes we have to look at the history of why we do things. Is it really necessary to continue some of the things that we do or do we do them just because we are comfortable doing it that way?

We do things just because we have always done it that way before.

When you keep doing the things to get what you get, you keep getting the things you got.

You can change without improving but you cannot improve without changing.

Plan from Imagination, not Memory.

As Yogi Bera said; “THE FUTURE AIN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE!” For hundreds of years, the world of business stayed pretty much the same, so what you learned from experience could be used for a long, long time. In fact, experience was your insurance policy. It almost guaranteed success.

If you are to grow and prosper in sustainable ways, entrepreneurial thinking needs to be valued and encouraged at all levels of leadership. You can no longer use the term “WE’VE NEVER DONE IT THAT WAY BEFORE!!!!” It takes hard work and effort to change, as change does not come easily.

Experience is not as helpful as it used to be.  The world is changing so rapidly that your experience may not always be a very good guide for the future.

Not convinced? Just take a look at a few facts:

Today, the body of knowledge known to mankind doubles every 907 days.

Our computing ability and capacity doubles every 14 months.

We once marveled at the advanced technology on Apollo 13.  Today your car has more technology than that rocket.

The first UNIVAC computer filled an entire room, but today your wristwatch has more power than that computer.

The average 21-year-old today can expect 11 to 14 jobs and two to three major career changes.

The average 21-year-old today can expect to spend more time taking care of his parents than his children.

Right now we have more people living on the planet than have ever died in the past.

You, your business, or your organization is not immune to the change process. You cannot be a leadership organization that is based upon traditions. You need to use imagination as new directions and partnerships are being developed. Will this make some people nervous, uncomfortable and complain?  Yes! Will it be worth it?  In my experience, yes!

Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial thinking involves seeing opportunities and having the ability to take and manage risks. It can emerge from industry experience or happen by accident coming from a hobby. It may result from developing local ideas or bringing new entrepreneurial talent into the community and requires individual as well as community attitude, vision, and passion to create.

You have two choices: choose to be proactive and be determined to make things happen, or be reactive and complain about things that happen to you because you choose to sit back and watch.

Economic and entrepreneurial development requires innovative thinking and new ways of doing  things as well as constantly changing and developing leadership.

Development requires all people in the organization to work together for a common vision.  Development is an attitude, as well as action.

You will hear people express how happy they are for change to take place, and those who complain because of change. You can make up your own mind how to react to change, but one thing is certain, the world is changing at a faster rate than ever before and there are no signs that point to it slowing down.

What will you do to lead this new type of thinking?  Refer to your experiences when appropriate and learn from them, but consider Wayne Gretsky’s approach to planning. As one of the greatest hockey stars of all time, he was asked what made him so successful.  He said, “I SKATE TO WHERE I THINK THE PUCK WILL BE.”

In today’s world, you have to go out and meet the opportunity and work to make it happen.

Understood is getting to understand what they want before you have them understand what you want.  Understanding is valuing another’s point-of-view, meeting them more than halfway in their viewpoint and developing empathy for their circumstance. As Stephen Covey says, "seek first to understand then to be understood."

Comfortable is a personal feeling.  When a person is comfortable, they have developed a sense of trust of you. Building that relationship takes integrity and following through with your promises and commitments. Giving them a feeling that they would like to return and develop a deeper relationship.

Appreciated is the most valued feeling a person desires. Most employees want appreciation from their employers more than they want an increase in money. It is just plain Gratitude in Action. Just like the saying goes; “a pat on the back goes so much farther than a kick in the pants!”
